5 Hot Super Bowl Prop Bets
When it comes to Super Bowl betting, prop bets are one of the most popular forms of gambling action. They may have started as simple add-ons to the point spread, money line or futures, but they have come into their own as a completely separate (and exciting) way to bet.
Here are 5 bets that offer a nice payout; plus, these prop bets can increase the level of fun and excitement as you watch the Super Bowl!
Hot Prop Bet 1
My number one prop bet for the Super Bowl is the number of receiving yards for a player. In this situation, you take one receiver and pick the under or over for the number of receiving yards. This is a great prop to bet on because you can research your player and his statistical trends. You can see how the receiver has done against the type of defenses that he faced throughout the season and career, and how that might relate to the team he faces in the Super Bowl. If he is a top receiver, and the over/under is at 82.5 yards, then the over will likely be around -150 while the under will be +120. If you think he will struggle, you can win $120 on $100.
Hot Prop Bet 2
The total number of sacks in the game is another good prop bet. Here, the total number of sacks for both teams is set, and you choose to go over or under. Again, there are a lot of stats to research here, which makes this a great bet. If you have two great defenses playing, then the over is usually a good play, especially if both teams are healthy come game time. Many times, this bet can be made at -115 on either the over or the under, meaning you put up $115 to win $100.
Hot Prop Bet 3
I think one of the more interesting prop bets that is becoming more and more popular each year is whether or not there will be a score within the first 7 1/2 minutes of the game. While this is more of a fun prop, it is still should be researched. If the two teams playing tend to run the ball a lot, then "No" is your best choice. On the other hand, if you have two high-powered offenses going at it - like the Colts and Saints last year - then "Yes" can be very tempting.
Hot Prop Bet 4
Passing yards by a particular quarterback is always one of the hottest prop bets for the Super Bowl. Typically, the number will be set somewhere around 270-280, depending on the QB. You chose to go either over or under. If one of the quarterbacks playing is averaging 315 yards passing, and his over/under is at 280, then taking the over is likely a good call, depending on how he fares against the defensive style of the other team.
Hot Prop Bet 5
Whether or not there will be a defensive or special teams touchdown scored in the game is typically a good bet to make. This prop is based on interceptions, fumbles, kickoff or punts returned for a touchdown. If two teams with great defenses and great special teams players are squaring off, then "Yes" is a wise bet. However, if both defenses are known to struggle, and their special teams are toward the bottom of the league statistically, sticking with "No" is a good decision.
The best decision is to go with the props that can be researched. While it can be tempting to bet on things like the time for the National Anthem, the chances of winning money in the long run are slim.
